Patrick Dean-designed FLUKE Dracula shirts available now on the FLUKE Big Cartel site.

Several of you (this is not an exaggeration, and it is something that really happened) asked us to let you know when the Patrick Dean-designed FLUKE Dracula shirts were going to be available again because we sold out of them at the actual event.

Feel free to tell all of your friends about this.

FLUKE 2024 OFFICIAL PLAYLIST

Apple keeps making it harder and harder for us to copy and paste the artists and titles of all the songs we played at FLUKE off of our somehow-still-working 2010 iPod 7G so we're being lazy and just posting screenshots. You're gonna have to work a little harder if you want to re-create this one at home. Sorry. We love you.

UPDATE: Playlist (metadata only) here (still needs a few translations)

21st ANNUAL FLUKE MINI-COMICS FESTIVAL – March 30th, 2024

This year’s FLUKE Mini-Comics Festival, sponsored by Bizarro-Wuxtry,

Inch-High Button Guy, Joker Joker TV, Mystic Punks, and

The Sequential Artists Workshop will take place on Saturday,

March 30th at The 40 Watt Club, 285 West Washington Street,

Athens, GA, from 10:00 AM until 6 PM.

Admission for the public is $2.00 per person.

Masks will be REQUIRED for all exhibitors and attendees.

FLUKE’s STATEMENT OF PURPOSE / MISSION

FLUKE is a mini-comic festival that has been organized by Athens-area

comic artists, underground publishers, and their enthusiasts since 2002.

That’s a really long time.

Conceived as a venue for the discussion and exchange of timely

ideas related to mini-comics, ‘zines, and other independent

publications, FLUKE is not a large comic convention or

advertising-saturated extravaganza.

This isn't to say we don't like our share of stuff—'cause we do.

However, we have kept the organization of the event as simple as

possible to ensure that it remains focused on work and ideas rather

than merchandising.

FLUKE is an enjoyable, affordable event for people of all ages and interests.

Flagpole writer Hillary Brown remarks:

"Part of the delight of FLUKE is encountering new folks and browsing

through undiscovered material. There’s stuff for kids, stuff for grown-ups,

stuff for people who like serious autobiographical narratives, and stuff

for people who’d rather read a mini-comic about mice shaped like a

wedge of cheese."

EVENT SPECS

Exhibitors register in advance for exhibition spaces at FLUKE.

EXHIBITOR SPACES for FLUKE 2024 are now sold out.

It is possible that a very small number of additional spaces will be

made available.

FLUKE 2024 pre-registration: HOW IT'S GONNA WORK THIS YEAR

 Hello!

This post will contain (we hope) everything you need to know about pre-registration for FLUKE 2024 exhibitor spaces.

FLUKE Exhibitor space lottery entries will go on sale at flukeathens.bigcartel.com at 10:00 am on Saturday, January 13. There will, at first, be 100 entries available. If they sell out, we'll make more available. Our goal is to make sure that everyone who wants a space at FLUKE 2024 will be able to get a lottery entry.

REGARDLESS OF HOW MANY LOTTERY ENTIRES ARE SOLD, NOTHING WILL CHANGE THE FACT THAT THERE ARE ONLY 60 EXHIBITOR SPACES AVAILABLE.

You cannot buy more than one entry. Any purchase of lottery entries with a total quantity greater than "1" (one) will be refunded and you will not be entered in the drawing.

If you use multiple emails to try to trick us and get more than one entry, we will find out, and you will be removed from the lottery drawing. Trust us, we will know. Don't get your friends to buy entries for you. Let's not be jerks about this.

As opposed to previous years, there are no "locals only" exhibitor spaces available for in-person purchase in Athens. Locals wishing to exhibit at FLUKE should enter the lottery.

The lottery drawing will take place on Thursday, January 25. It will be live-streamed. Right now, we're planning to roll dice to determine who gets an exhibitor space, but if more than 120 people enter the lottery, we'll use a computer program because the largest die we can find is a d120. The livestream will be a part of the regular weekly show from our OFFICIAL STREAMING PARTNER, Joker Joker TV.

Lottery entries will cost one dollar each. If you are chosen, the exhibitor fee is $15. If this seems like a crass exercise designed to generate more money for FLUKE, that's because it is. We're only in it for the money. Also, there was a 12% increase in our rental cost for the tables and we're passing that along to you.

The online lottery tickets are sold using PayPal as a payment method. If you don't have PayPal, that's okay. Just get in touch with Robert at secondperiod@gmail.com and he'll make sure you get a lottery entry. You have to do this before Monday, January 22.

Lottery entries for exhibitor spaces at FLUKE 2024 will be "locked" and no more entries will be sold starting at 12:01am on Monday, January 22, 2024.

More information will be posted here as it becomes available. Thanks, as always for your decades of support. FLUKE loves you. For Patrick, forever.

FLUKE 2024 Pre-Registration Opens January 13 BUT IT'S DIFFERENT THIS TIME

 Hi, friends.

We're going to open pre-registration for FLUKE 2024 on Saturday, January 13, 2024 at 10:00 am, but we're handling things a little differently this time around.

Last time we opened registration, in January of 2023, exhibitor spaces sold out in less than 2 minutes. While it is exciting to us that people want to exhibit their work at FLUKE, this nearly instant sell-out is kind of stressful because it means that people have to be sitting next to their computer and refreshing the page like mad just to get a spot.

For FLUKE 2024, we're going to try a lottery-style registration. It's a significant change in the way exhibitor tables are sold, but we think it might alleviate a little of the associated stress without FLUKE having to become a juried show (to be clear, we do not want to become a juried show).

Here's how this is going to work:

  • In the past, we have sold 60 exhibitor spaces (one half of a 6-foot table) online. These are the spaces that sold out so quickly. In the past we usually have approximately 30 people on the waiting list after tables sell out.
  • On Saturday, January 13, 2024, we're going to make 100 "tickets" available on flukeathens.bigcartel.com for ONE DOLLAR each. People can only buy one ticket. If you buy more than one ticket, you will be removed from the lottery and will not have a chance to be a FLUKE 2024 exhibitor.
  • Each ticket purchased will be assigned a number, 00-99
  • On Saturday, January 27, 2024 we will ROLL THE DICE (standard 10-sided percentile dice) and let them randomly choose 60 of the 100 entries.
  • Those who are chosen by the dice will have 7 days to pay the $15 exhibitor fee. If someone does not pay their table fee within 7 days, we will ROLL THE DICE to determine who takes their place.
  • We're going to try to be really silly and live-stream the dice rolling, but that might not work out because as of today we don't know how to do that.
THIS MIGHT NOT WORK, but we're going to try ti this time around to see if it alleviates the stress of instant sell-outs. There have been some questions about why we don't just find a bigger venue and there are three main reasons. The first is that we consider The 40 Watt Club our home. we like working with the people there, and moving FLUKE somewhere else would make it feel different. We like the way it feels now. The second is that we want to stay within easy walking distance of our main sponsor, Bizarro-Wuxtry. FLUKE would literally not exist without them, the best comic book store on the entire planet. Third, moving to another venue would increase (likely greatly increase) the cost associated with FLUKE. We don't make a profit from FLUKE, and we've been able to keep our financial situation at a delicately balanced "break even" point for 21 years because we aren't interested in making a profit. But moving to another venue would increase the costs to us and we would absolutely have to pass that increase on to the exhibitors and attendees.

Mathematically-minded readers may see the above and think "wait... this seems like a way for FLUKE to raise an additional $100 through the sale of these 'tickets' and still charge the selected vendors the same amount." Good work, nerd. You're absolutely right. This little bit of extra money will be used to pay artists a little more to make poster designs for us, have some more stickers and buttons made, and maybe (depending on ongoing pandemic progress) have cake available at FLUKE once again.

If you have any questions at all about any of this, please email Robert at secondperiod@gmail.com. He's ready to discuss it with you.

Thanks for reading our silly plans. We hope to see you at FLUKE 2024 on March 30th at the 40 Watt Club!
